Environmental Scientist/Health Physicist (ES/HP)
For more than 35 years, the MJW Companies (MJW Corporation, Inc. and MJW Technical Services, Inc.) have helped clients in the United States and internationally better understand and effectively remediate radiologically contaminated sites and comply with CERCLA, NRC, MARSSIM and complex nuclear and radiological regulations. MJW professionals include Health Physicists, Radiological Engineers, and a broad range of environmental disciplines that measure, interpret, and control radiation and environmental hazardous materials and ensure the protection of workers, the public, and the environment.
Position: Environmental Scientist/Health Physicist (ES/HP)
Current positions are available in MJW’s Amherst, NY office.
To continue building our team of professionals, MJW is seeking conscientious and reliable natural sciences graduates with an interest in expanding their educational background to include all aspects of environmental site investigation involving radioactive materials.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals in health physics, regulatory compliance, radiological engineering, site remediation and environmental sciences in a small team setting. Candidates will support MJW project managers and clients in solving complex radiological site assessment and compliance projects that include an equal mix of field and office activities. It is expected that the successful candidate will take initiative in learning unfamiliar subject matter and in utilizing coworkers and managers as mentors to grow their expertise and knowledge of health physics, regulations, and related radiological or environmental sciences.
Reporting and data assessment skills using MS Office software tools will be emphasized and required. Mapping, statistical analysis, and graphics software will also be used.
Training will be provided, and promotional opportunities are available for candidates that demonstrate a willingness to grow, take advantage of the resources and opportunities available, and that participate in maintaining MJW’s reputation for excellence and professionalism.
The ES/HP will work under the mentorship of senior staff and participate in proposal preparation, project planning, field activities, and data assessment and reporting. Candidates will receive radiological safety and HP training that will include; the theory and use of radiological instrumentation, regulatory requirements and guidance, pathway analysis and data assessment and statistical evaluation.
Work activities and duties can typically be performed and completed during normal working hours but may require occasional overtime or off-normal hours to complete reports or respond to client needs. Work is generally located in the Western NY area but may, on occasion, involve some travel.
Training is encouraged and will be supported by MJW. Candidates will work in a team environment where collaboration is encouraged and will be expected to be reliable, mature, detail-oriented, organized, and able to work under time constraints in a project-oriented environment.
Preferred Skills:
• Bachelor’s degree: Science based curriculum preferred.
• Site investigation or field work in environmental studies
• Statistical assessment using statistical or GIS software.
• Organized with good writing and reporting skills.
• Proficient with MS Excel, Word, and related programs
Requirements include:
• Valid Driver’s License and dependable transportation.
• Ability to work outside in cold or hot weather.
• Ability to lift/carry up to 30 pounds and walk on uneven surfaces.
• Ability to read and interpret digital and analog displays.
• Willingness to work with and around radioactive materials and/or environmental hazards.
• Ability to pass physical examination.
All candidates must have US citizenship or be legally able to work in the United States.
Salary Range: $75,000 - $95,000 per year
