What is metrology? Metrology is the science of measurement. It establishes an unbroken chain of traceability from the measurement & test equipment on the factory floor or in the lab, allowing it to be referenced to higher levels of measurements back to the original definition of the unit.  We both use high precision inspection tools to calibrate gages, but also general machining operations to build gages.

Position Summary: Inspects, adjusts, and laps thread plug and ring thread gages. to conformance standards and blueprint specifications.  Some use of computers and general shop equipment also desirable.

Job Duties:

  • Reads shop traveler for product specifications, such as size, type of gage and any special requirements.
  • Operates precision measuring equipment including blueprint reading.
  • Calibrates and measures thread ring, plug and other gages.
  • Operates quick reverse power driven motors.
  • Issue computer generated certificates of calibration.
  • Communicates with co-workers and management to receive instructions and coordinate activities.
  • Cleans work area on a regular basis.
  • Notifies management when stock is low.
  • (May) Operate lathes, mills, grinders, saws as required.
  • Installation of new or repaired equipment or parts
  • Routine testing, calibration, and monitoring of equipment.
  • Analysis and interpretation of testing result data
  • Troubleshooting when results fall out of the expected ranges.
  • Repair of equipment as necessary
  • Compilation of reports for facility management

Skills Needed:

  • Mechanically inclined- interest and aptitude in precision mechanical work.
  • Attention to detail – precision is essential in this role; the smallest details have to be noted and acted upon when necessary
  • Coordination – will be working with a range of manufacturing equipment, conducting tests in strict adherence to SOPs and protocols.
  • Analytical skills – must be able to take raw test data and analyze it accurately, reaching sound conclusions. Must also be able to critically analyze problems and come up with innovative solutions when required.
  • Team working – must work closely with colleagues to define testing routines, protocols, and schedules.

Physical Demands:

  • Stand, walk, push, pull, sit, reach overhead and bend to the floor.
  • Exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Exert up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
