Position Title
Cook
Statement of Duties
The cook should have a love, patience and understanding for preschool age children. It is extremely important that center cook is versatile and willing to work in areas other than in the kitchen. Time management skills are a must along with the ability to work with others. Basic food preparation and nutrition knowledge is required.
General Responsibilities/Duties/Tasks
• Flexibility in lunch changes: field trips, summer camp, snow days
• Order milk for entire program
• Plan menu’s (use available government commodities and creativity with foods)
• Evaluate meal (order proper food items-considering food preferences and needs recommended by staff)
• Take monthly inventory
• Make main item on the menu each daily
• Wash dishes and keep the kitchen/workspace clean and organized
• Get lunch count each morning for everyone served
• Order necessary supplies/ checking costs
• Maintain the entire program: budget/costs/ DPI/ food ordering production sheets/rotate menus
• Ensure allergy or special food diets are prepared
• All receipts to be turned in by Wednesday to Director for review
• Wash dish towels and potholders (use the CDC washer and dryer)
• Clean the stove, including the oven/mats
• Clean vents above the stove
• Keep cupboards and drawers clean
• Defrost freezer
• Keep refrigerator and freezer shelves clean/ Lower Level
• Keep dishwasher clean (use Lime Away every 2 months)
• Attending food handlers/DPI training yearly
• Take out recycle products and empty trashcan daily
• Sweep and mop floor daily
• Assist in classroom as needed
• Interact with the children in a manner that clearly conveys love and acceptance
• Lead and participate in the storage and utilization of ingredients and products (rotate stock)
Qualifications/Training/Skills
• Should be able to carry 40 pounds and stand for extended periods of time. Hearing, reading and writing skills should be appropriate.
• Report directly to the Director. They will work together to prepare lunch menus, grocery lists, supply lists, misc. purchases and any other problems that may arise.
• They must be aware that any and all persons working with the children are Mandatory Child Abuse Reporters. This means that any and all suspicions of Child Abuse and Neglect need to be reported to the Director and the authorities.
• Needs to be trustworthy and to respect confidentiality of all the different areas of the Development Center. He or she needs to be able to keep any information that they hear private.
• Needs to be able to keep all the meal records on the children. You assist with the food program records of how many children meals were served each meal and any other records needed to maintain proper documentation of the Center.
• Is required to always dress tastefully and professionally. The Cook will always use appropriate language and positive discipline when possible. The Cook will treat everyone with Christian love and respect.
• Agrees to attend any and all workshops, in-services, classes, or any training that the Director deems necessary.
• Must see the Development Center and this position to help children by cooking good nutritious meals for our children. He or she will have to be able to be organized to be able to have all meals ready on time for the children to eat on scheduled times. He or she must have knowledge of what constitutes a nutritious meal and the proper amount of food to make that will cover the Government Guidelines.
