Reports to: Maintenance Director
Job Goal: To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play and develop.
Performance Responsibilities:
The custodian is responsible for maintaining clean, attractive, and safe buildings and grounds which will contribute to a comfortable and productive school environment. Work hours are created based on the school needs. The custodian's primary duties are to ensure the quality of the school environment and the setup and cleaning during and after school activities.
Educational Requirements and Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent
List of duties and expectations:
- Assumes the responsibility for the daily opening and closing of facilities to include: checking all entrances for proper maintenance and security, raising and lowering the flags, ensuring proper interior and exterior lighting for the activities scheduled, and inspects buildings and grounds for any conditions needing immediate attention.
- Inspects, regulates, and maintains heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
- Shovels, plows and sands, driveways, sidewalks, parking areas, steps and playgrounds as appropriate.
- Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment and fuel on hand and requisitions such needed replacements far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian in his/her duties.
- Scrubs and disinfects toilet floors, sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
- Inspects and maintains on a regular schedule all motors, engines and other mechanical equipment in good working order.
- Moves furniture, equipment and/or supplies within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the Principal.
- Makes minor routine repairs and general routine maintenance to the electrical, plumbing, and general systems within the building. More extensive repair and maintenance are coordinated through the Head Custodian and Director of Buildings and Grounds.
- Collects, stores, and disposes of all refuge inside and outside the building.
- On a daily basis and more frequently, if necessary, cleans the corridors, sweeps classrooms, dusts furniture and windowsills, empties wastebaskets, and vacuums carpeted areas.
- Maintains and operates equipment: tractor, scrubber, buffer, snow blowers, etc.
- Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least once a year, and more frequently in the heavy traffic areas. Office windows need to be cleaned weekly.
- Cleans whiteboards at least once a week.
- Works cooperatively with the Building Principal and local police on security matters and in reporting acts of vandalism, theft, or deliberate littering.
- Inspects building daily for graffiti on lockers, walls, etc.
- Handles daily set up and cleaning of lunchrooms.
- Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas neat, safe, and clean at all times.
- Attends district custodial meetings as scheduled.
- Attends maintenance schools or training programs as the need arises in order to enhance maintenance skills.
- Performs emergency repair and/or cleaning services as necessary and/or directed by the
- Building Principal, Head Custodian, and Director of Buildings and Grounds.
- Is on call for all emergencies that may arise concerning the custodial and maintenance care of the buildings and grounds.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
You must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time. Must be able to climb ladders and stairs. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and carry up to 30 lbs. Must be able to reach over your head to put items (which may weigh up to 40 lbs.) onto shelves.
Working Conditions:
Temperatures will vary in the buildings depending on the weather conditions. Must be able to work in warm/hot/cold environments.
