Position Summary:
Answers and directs calls coming in on main lines, to provide information to callers regarding programs and services and to page staff using the intercom and beepers.
Requirements
Education/Experience and Licensing/Certification Requirements: Equivalent to graduation from high school and six (6) months of experience in the operation of a switchboard/telecommunications system.
Prefer: One (1) year of PBX experience.
Knowledge of: Procedures and techniques for using telecommunication systems; techniques for dealing with the public; office practices and procedures; department and hospital safety policies and procedures; patient rights; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.
Skill in: Applying customer service techniques; taking and relaying messages; listening and determining needs of customers; dealing with irate and hostile customers while remaining patient, tactful and diplomatic; projecting a professional and positive image of UMC; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds under stressful conditions; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; maintaining records and files; understanding and following oral and written instructions; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment; stamina to remain seated and maintain concentration for an extended period of time, vision to read printed materials and a VDT screen, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
