Aetna has to maintain real-time communication with the pharmacies for various different processes like Member Enrolment, Claims Adjudication, etc. APMCAS (Aetna Pharmacy Management Claim Adjudication System) is basically used to check member, provider, and group eligibility, quote plan benefits, view claim details, confirm existing (account) authorization, and verify contractual information. APMCAS is Aetna Pharmacy Management’s main claim processing unit. NCPDP (National Council for Prescription Drug Programs) maintains requirements regarding the standard way pharmacy claims must be transmitted. Telecommunications Standard Version D.0 is an updated version of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standard for pharmacy claims transactions.
